Alexandra “Alex” Jackson has literally grown up with the law. She has been surrounded by lawyers (including her father, uncle and cousin), to the despair of her social worker mother. She started working in her father’s law office at the age of 14 as a part-time receptionist and has worked part-time every year up until college, as well as summers while in college and law school.
Alex attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. During college, she majored in East Asian Languages and Culture with a concentration in Japan. She learned Japanese and spent her junior year abroad, living in Kyoto, Japan, attending Doshisha University. She lived with a Japanese family, perfecting her Japanese, and learning traditional Japanese dance and how to plat the traditional Japanese koto. She was on the Dean’s list each year she was in Northampton and earned a Liberal Arts Commendation in addition to playing in the Handbell Choir and participating in the Creative Writing Club, among other activities. Because of her successes at Smith, Alex was recruited by the University of Maine School of Law and offered a merit scholarship. She accepted that offer and attended Maine Law, graduating Cum Laude. While at Maine Law she also made time to participate in the Women’s Law Association and the Transactional Law Society. During law school Alex attended several national seminars by the National Organization of Veterans Advocates as a student member and, upon graduation became a full time supporting member, in addition to her membership in the American and Maine Bar Association.
She is admitted to both the Maine and New Hampshire bars as well as the bar of the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. During law school, Alex determined that in addition to practicing Veterans Law, she also wanted to combine her parents’ interests in law and in working with families to develop her own specialty, focusing on planning for families and businesses. To that end, she extensively studies business and tax issues, including estate planning for families and small business owners, and elder law. She recently attended the prestigious Heckerling Institute of Estate Planning to hone her planning skills. When not practicing law, Alex loves to travel, particularly enjoying multiple visits to Japan. She has been to five of the seven continents and vows to get to South America and Antarctica to complete her sweep of all seven. When home, she enjoys creative writing, cosplay and spending time with her cats.
