Maine<\/a> covers more than 65 square miles of gently rolling hills along the banks of the lovely Androscoggin River<\/a>. Lewiston, Maine’s second largest city, lies across the river, and the Lewiston – Auburn Metro Area<\/a> forms an important component to ME’s<\/a> economic vitality.Auburn is in close proximity to the capital city of Augusta and only 30 miles north of the bright lights and bustle of Portland and South Portland. Other Maine towns of distinction within an easy drive include Rockland, Biddeford, Waterville and Bangor.<\/p>\n

Auburn’s 2003 estimated population was just over 23,000, (Census<\/a> data), with a high concentration of French-Canadian<\/a> ancestry. In the 19th century, Auburn’s thriving shoe factories attracted many immigrants across the Canadian<\/a> border. Today, Auburn serves as the seat of Androscoggin County and is also part of the larger Portland – South Portland – Biddeford Metro Area. Auburn’s adopted motto is “City of Opportunity.” Etched on the walls of the City Hall are the words \u201cVestigia Nulla Retrorsum,\u201d meaning “No Steps Backward.”<\/p>\n

Education remains a high priority in Auburn, ME. The Auburn School Department<\/a> consistently receives awards and honors. Four institutes of higher education lie within a 20-mile radius, including Bates College<\/a>, ranked among the nation\u2019s<\/a> most prestigious small colleges, the Central Maine Community College<\/a>, Bowdoin College<\/a> and St. Joseph’s College<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Auburn honors its past with a plethora of historic sites<\/a>, including the Edward Little High School<\/a>, the Frank L. Dingley House, the Barker Mill<\/a> and the William Briggs Homestead<\/a>. The National Historic Register<\/a> lists a number of Auburn homes and buildings. The Androscoggin Museum and Historical Society<\/a> contains many artifacts of local history, as well as a section of Civil War<\/a> memorabilia.<\/p>\n

Even with its regard for the past, Auburn keeps step with modern times as well, with the Auburn Mall<\/a> and the rather futuristic Auburn Festival Place, which showcases artist Ross Miller’s two public water sculptures. Outdoor activities abound year-round, with lovely riverside gardens to stroll through in the warm months, and ice skating, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling through the surrounding hills in the winter. Autumn brings the stunning fall foliage, enveloping the town in color.<\/p>\n
