Helping Veterans

get the benefits they deserve

When Do I Apply?

It’s important that you apply for disability benefits as soon as possible after you become disabled. The SSA receives so many benefit applications that it can take many months to process your claim. In Maine, claims often receive more prompt attention in comparison to other parts of the country, where it can take over a year before a hearing on a claim might be held.

In New England, the fastest processing time was nine months or longer as of mid-2009. Any delay in getting your claim on file just adds to the time you may have to wait to receive benefits, if your claim is successful.

At Jackson & MacNichol, our experienced Social Security attorneys and staff can assist you at all stages of the claim process to make sure your case stays on track. Jackson & MacNichol serves clients with Social Security claims throughout New England, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Boston, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Not only can you expect a significant wait while your initial claim for benefits is processed, but benefits for SSDI disability are not awarded for the time period going back more than one year after you file your claim. So if you wait too long to get your claim on file, you’re losing both time and money.

Applying as soon as you are disabled also reduces any problems you might have in documenting your disability with medical records. The longer you wait, the greater the chance that your records might not be available for some reason beyond your control. There’s no reason to risk the loss of medical records that you need to support your claim. Filing promptly minimizes any such risks.

At Jackson & MacNichol, we’ll work diligently and promptly to ensure that your claim is prepared thoroughly, yet quickly. You want your claim prepared fully and correctly so you don’t waste more time getting records that the SSA will ask for during its claim review. Let us help you get your benefits application moving forward with the best chance for a favorable decision.
